San José is an alluring costal village in the province of Almeria, where the plethora of the 20th century have thankfully not taken a hold. It is a exceptional niche where travellers are genuinely welcomed as honoured guests, rather than simply as tourists. It is a region immortalised by the most famous Spaghetti Westerns such as "The good, The bad and The ugly" and other cinematic  classics - "Indiana Jones and the last Crusade" and "Lawrence of Arabia... San José is surrounded by the Cabo de Gata Nature Reserve, the only desert in Europe "Tabernas", and some of the finest beaches in Andalusía; Los Genoveses, Playa de Mónsul and Media Luna... located along a bridle way to the southwest of the town. The scenery is remarkable; rocky headlands, volcanic stones, flamingo wildlife reserve, caves and charming small fishing villages nearby. Sailing, surfing, diving, trekking and cycling are some of the activities you could enjoy in addition to the famed  Spanish cuisine. By plane Ryanair & Easyjet fly daily direct from London (Stansted). If you are travelling from elsewhere, there are flight connections via Madrid with Spanair. (Remind.., book ahead for cheap flights (60-80 £)) By car is less than a 30 minute drive by car from Almeria airport. In Almeria airport, several car hire companies can provide you with vehicles. Check the website of the airport for the best offers. (I usually use www.solmar.es). At the airport, exit towards Murcia. Keep driving until you find the junction to Níjar. Follow this road until you get to the roundabout drive, where you take the exit towards Cabo de Gata. There will be a sign to San José. By taxi A taxi from the airport to San José will cost you around £ 20. If you want to book ahead, you can order by telephone: Manuel Arqueros (0034) 669 07 14 42. By bus Check the timetable at the airport or call Coach "Bernardo" at (0034) 958 25 04 22. From San José When you arrive at the town follow the signs to the harbour "Al Puerto". Once you find the third sign to "Al Puerto", turn left where you will find the street "c/Real del Sotillo" (You will see a row of eucalyptus trees). At the beginning of the street, on you right hand side, look for "Calle Virgen del Rocío", where the house is located. San José is one of the larger villages in the Cabo de Gata Nature Reserve in the province of Almeria. This part of Spain tops the sunshine league table for Europe with an average yearly temperature of 20º C. During the winter you will feel the water sea warmer than in the land. So even in December or February you can go for a swim.
